VisitLegal Dispute Halts Auction of Shohei Ohtani's Historic 50-50 Home Run Ball
Sep 27, 2024, 02:03 PM
Shohei Ohtani recently completed Major League Baseball's first-ever 50-50 season, hitting 50 home runs and stealing 50 bases. The fan who caught Ohtani's historic 50th home run ball may face a significant income tax bill. The ownership of the ball is currently under legal dispute, with a lawsuit filed against Goldin Auctions LLC, Chris Belanski, and Kelvin Ramirez. The complaint alleges that Belanski pried the ball from the hands of 18-year-old Matus. An emergency hearing was held before Miami-Dade Circuit Court Judge Spenser Eig, who mostly halted the auction of the ball. Uustal argued to stop the sale, suggesting it could be the most expensive baseball ever sold. This type of legal conflict is not unprecedented, as a similar case occurred in 2001 over Barry Bonds' 73rd home run ball.
