VisitLargest Animal Genome Sequenced in Lungfishes at 91 Gb
Aug 22, 2024, 02:22 PM
The largest animal genome ever sequenced has been identified in lungfishes, with a size of 91 Gb. This genome is significantly larger than the human genome, which is 3 Gb. The sequencing of lungfish genomes provides insights into genome expansion and tetrapod evolution. The Lepidosiren genome, a type of lungfish, is 87 Gb, marking it as the largest animal genome sequenced so far using PacBio sequencing technology. This achievement involved 2199 Gb of HiFi data, starting with Nanobind extracted DNA.
