VisitLarge Private Bath Complex for 30 Unearthed in Pompeii's Regio IX
Jan 17, 2025, 12:08 PM
Archaeologists have unearthed a large and sophisticated private thermal bath complex in the ancient Roman city of Pompeii, believed to have been used by its owner to entertain wealthy guests. The discovery, located in the Regio IX area on Via di Nola, is considered one of the largest private bath complexes found in Pompeii. The complex is connected to a banquet hall adorned with frescoes depicting scenes from the Trojan war, suggesting the residence belonged to a member of Pompeii's elite. The baths could accommodate up to 30 people and included a hot room, a warm room, and a cold room with a courtyard and a large pool. The find highlights how Roman homes served as stages for social and political displays, with the owner using the baths and banquets to affirm social status and possibly influence electoral outcomes.
