VisitL.A. County Warns Against Raw Pet Food After H5 Bird Flu Detected in Recalled Northwest Naturals Product, Linked to Oregon Cat Death
Dec 24, 2024, 10:31 PM
Los Angeles County health officials have issued a warning to pet owners to avoid feeding their pets raw food following the detection of the H5 bird flu virus in recalled Northwest Naturals Brand 2lb Feline Turkey Recipe Raw & Frozen Pet Food. The recall was initiated after an Oregon cat died from H5 bird flu after consuming the product. The recalled products, sold in California, are packaged in 2-pound plastic bags with 'Best if used by' dates of May 21, 2026, B10 and June 23, 2026, B1. Pet owners are urged to dispose of the product immediately. Additionally, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health confirmed H5 bird flu in four house cats that consumed recalled raw milk and later died, and is investigating three more cases from another household where one cat tested positive for Influenza A, indicating possible H5 bird flu. The department advises against the consumption of raw milk and raw meat products by both humans and pets due to the risk of harmful bacteria and viruses, including H5 bird flu.
