VisitKlubnik's Four TDs Propel Clemson to 31-21 Lead Over SMU in ACC Title Game
Dec 8, 2024, 02:40 AM
Clemson took a commanding lead over SMU in the ACC Championship game in Charlotte, capitalizing on early turnovers and penalties. The Tigers jumped out to a 14-0 lead within the first four minutes, starting with a strip-sack by T.J. Parker on SMU quarterback Kevin Jennings. Clemson quarterback Cade Klubnik, who was 5 of 6 for 106 yards and three touchdowns in the first quarter, connected with freshman wide receiver Bryant Wesco Jr. for two touchdowns, including 35-yard and 43-yard scores. SMU, playing in their first ACC title game, faced their largest deficit of the season but responded with a 24-yard touchdown run by Jennings. However, costly roughing the passer penalties and turnovers hindered their momentum. At halftime, Clemson led 24-7 despite SMU outgaining them in total yards. In the second half, SMU narrowed the score to 24-14 after Jennings connected with Brashard Smith for a 10-yard touchdown. Clemson extended their lead to 31-14 with Klubnik's fourth touchdown pass, this time to tight end Jake Briningstool. SMU scored again to make it 31-21 early in the fourth quarter, but Clemson's defense continued to pressure Jennings, securing their advantage. Clemson capitalized on starting several drives in SMU territory and moved closer to securing the ACC title.
