Kinuko Iwamoto, the former chancellor of Tokyo Women’s Medical University, was arrested by the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department on suspicion of breach of trust. The arrest relates to the alleged illicit disbursement of approximately ¥120 million in connection with the construction of new campus buildings at the university located in Shinjuku Ward, Tokyo. The funds were purportedly paid as consulting fees to a 68-year-old male first-class registered architect, who did not perform any consulting services for the university. The police suspect that Iwamoto diverted some of the money for personal use and are continuing their investigation to uncover the full extent of the case. The university has faced multiple scandals in the past, including irregular salary payments and illicit receipt of donations.
