VisitKenyan Public University Lecturers and Staff Begin Nationwide Strike Over Pay Dispute
Sep 18, 2024, 08:30 AM
Learning in public universities across Kenya has been disrupted as lecturers and non-teaching staff begin a nationwide strike. The strike, organized by the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) and the Kenya Universities Staff Union (KUSU), is in response to delayed salaries, non-comprehensive medical cover, and unresolved issues related to the 2021-2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). The strike has affected institutions such as the Technical University of Mombasa, South Eastern Kenya University, Technical University of Kenya, University of Eldoret, Pwani University, Maseno University, and Kenyatta University. Striking university lecturers held demonstrations on the streets of Nairobi. The strike involves staff from all 35 public universities. Union leaders have stated they are open to talks with the government to resolve the grievances.
