VisitKenyan Protests Escalate: 10 Killed, 50 Injured as Finance Bill 2024 Sparks Nationwide Unrest
Jun 25, 2024, 11:50 AM
Youth-led protests in Kenya have escalated significantly as demonstrators oppose the Finance Bill 2024, which proposes new tax hikes. The protests, which began in Nairobi, have spread nationwide, with significant unrest reported in Mombasa, Kisumu, Nyeri, Eldoret, and other cities. The bill, supported by President William Ruto, aims to raise $2.7 billion in additional taxes to reduce the budget deficit and state borrowing. However, it has sparked widespread anger among citizens who are already struggling with the high cost of living. On Tuesday, protesters stormed the parliamentary compound in Nairobi, leading to violent clashes with police. Reports indicate that at least 10 people have been killed and 50 injured as police fired live rounds to disperse the crowds. Fires were seen inside the parliament building, and several administrative buildings were set ablaze. Protests also caused significant disruptions on Thika Road and Kenyatta Avenue. The situation remains tense as lawmakers continue to debate the contentious tax proposals. Over 200 people have reportedly been injured during the protests.
