VisitKenya Floods: 83 Dead, Over $10 Billion in Damages, $30M Response Fund
Apr 28, 2024, 07:24 AM
Kenya is grappling with severe flooding that has resulted in significant casualties and widespread displacement. The death toll has risen to 83, with over 70 people reported killed and thousands displaced due to the floods. The flooding has caused extensive damage across the country, including the destruction of infrastructure such as roads and bridges, paralyzing transport and resulting in direct financial damages exceeding $10 billion. Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua announced that the government has allocated 4 billion shillings (approximately 30 million U.S. dollars) for immediate flood response. Additionally, the floods have cut off several villages in Kirinyaga Central, isolated parts of Nairobi County, and disrupted transport in various regions. The government is also distributing relief supplies to affected individuals.
