VisitKate Douglass Wins Gold in 200m Breaststroke at Paris Olympics, Sets American Record with 2:19.24

American swimmer Kate Douglass from UVA won the gold medal in the women's 200-meter breaststroke at the Paris Olympics, setting a new American record with a time of 2:19.24. Douglass held off a late charge from defending Olympic champion Tatjana Smith of South Africa, who finished second with a time of 2:19.60. Tes Schouten of the Netherlands took the bronze with a time of 2:21.05. This victory marks Douglass's first Olympic gold medal and is the fourth gold for TeamUSA in swimming at these games. Lilly King, another American competitor, finished eighth in the event. The other gold medals were won by Katie Ledecky, Torri Huske, and the men's 4x100 freestyle relay team.
