Dec 22, 2024, 11:00 AM
Javed Munshi, a 58-year-old suspected member of the banned Tehreek-e-Mujahideen outfit from Kashmir, was apprehended in a joint operation by the Jammu and Kashmir Police and West Bengal's Special Task Force (STF) in the Canning area of South 24 Parganas. Munshi, a resident of Tangpura in Srinagar, was arrested from his relative's home and has been remanded to transit custody until December 31 by the Alipore CJM court. He is suspected of attempting to establish a network in West Bengal and was allegedly planning to flee to Bangladesh via waterways from Canning. Munshi had reportedly been trained in Pakistan and is accused of involvement in multiple attacks on the Indian Army in Kashmir. The arrest has raised concerns about the potential expansion of terrorist networks in West Bengal, Assam, and Kerala, with Indian intelligence agencies expressing worry over new strategies by terrorist organizations.
