Karnataka Cabinet Approves Job Reservation Bill for Kannadigas: 50% and 75% Quotas in IT Sector

The Karnataka Cabinet has approved a bill mandating significant job reservations for Kannadigas in the private sector. The bill stipulates a 50% reservation for locals in management positions and 75% in non-management roles, covering the entire private sector, including the IT sector. Additionally, it mandates a 100% reservation for Kannadigas in Group C and D posts, which include clerical and support roles. The bill has sparked controversy, with industry leaders such as Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw and Mohandas Pai criticizing it as discriminatory and regressive. They argue that the bill could deter investment and hamper the state's economic growth. Nasscom has also expressed disappointment, warning that the bill could force companies to relocate. The Karnataka government, led by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, asserts that the bill aims to ensure job opportunities for local residents. In response to the backlash, Siddaramaiah deleted a tweet about the bill. The bill also includes penalties of up to Rs 25,000 for violations.
