VisitJustice Ketanji Brown Jackson Becomes First Supreme Court Justice to Perform on Broadway in '& Juliet'
Dec 16, 2024, 04:10 PM
Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, the first Black woman to sit on the Supreme Court, fulfilled another of her life goals by making her Broadway debut in a one-night performance of the musical '& Juliet' on Saturday. Jackson became the first sitting Supreme Court Justice to appear on a Broadway stage. '& Juliet' is a modern, gender-bending retelling of Shakespeare's 'Romeo and Juliet', featuring a queer twist that explores themes of gender identity. The play includes the character 'May', Juliet's best friend, who is portrayed with he/she/they pronouns. Jackson had a speaking part and joined in song and dance numbers during the performance. Raised in Miami, she participated in a post-show discussion with the audience. In her memoir 'Lovely One', Jackson shared her dream of combining her passion for law and theater by appearing on Broadway.
