VisitJudy Garland's 'Wizard of Oz' Ruby Slippers Sell for $32.5M at Heritage Auction
Dec 7, 2024, 05:30 PM
The ruby slippers worn by Judy Garland in the iconic film 'The Wizard of Oz' were auctioned off on Saturday, nearly two decades after they were stolen from the Judy Garland Museum in Grand Rapids, Minnesota. The slippers, which were once estimated to fetch $3 million, sold for a record-breaking $32.5 million, making them the most expensive worn item in Hollywood history. The auction, held by Heritage Auctions, also included other memorabilia from the film, such as a hat worn by Margaret Hamilton, who played the Wicked Witch of the West. The theft of the slippers occurred in 2005 when Terry Jon Martin used a hammer to smash the museum's door and display case to steal the shoes.
