VisitJudge Rules San Jose State's Transgender Player Blaire Fleming Eligible for Tournament
Nov 25, 2024, 09:12 PM
San Jose State University's women's volleyball team, which includes transgender player Blaire Fleming, will compete in the upcoming Mountain West Conference tournament after a federal judge denied a request to block her participation. Players and coaches from five other schools in the conference had filed a lawsuit alleging Title IX violations and seeking to bar Fleming from competition on the grounds that she is transgender. U.S. District Judge S. Kato Crews, a Biden appointee, rejected the request for a preliminary injunction and barred the athletes from testifying. The tournament begins in two days, and the Spartans have secured the No. 2 seed and a first-round bye. Earlier in the season, Boise State and Utah State forfeited their matches against San Jose State over the issue. The plaintiffs plan to appeal the ruling.
