VisitJuan Soto Inks 15-Year, $765M Deal with Mets, Eyes Dynasty and Citi Field Debut
Dec 12, 2024, 08:13 PM
Juan Soto has signed a record-breaking 15-year, $765 million contract with the New York Mets, surpassing Shohei Ohtani's $700 million deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers. This monumental agreement was finalized on Wednesday, with Soto set to be introduced at Citi Field on Thursday. The contract includes a potential opt-out clause after five years, unless the Mets increase his salary by $4 million annually, raising the total value to $805 million. Soto, a four-time MLB All-Star, chose the Mets over offers from the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, Toronto Blue Jays, and the Dodgers, citing the Mets' potential to build a dynasty and their consistent messaging about family as key factors in his decision. Mets owner Steve Cohen expressed his commitment to changing the perception of the Mets as a premier team, while president of baseball operations David Stearns highlighted Soto's fit with the team's culture. Soto's contract includes perks like a luxury suite at Citi Field, premium seats for home games, and security for his family, underscoring the Mets' dedication to making him feel comfortable and happy within the organization. Soto will make his Citi Field debut on April 4, 2025, against the Blue Jays, following his season-opening game in Houston on March 27. In his only season with the Yankees, Soto batted .288 with 41 homers and 109 RBIs, contributing to their World Series appearance.
