John Avlon has secured the Democratic nomination for the U.S. House in New York's 1st Congressional District. Avlon, a former CNN political analyst and co-founder of the political group No Labels, won the primary with 70.5% of the vote (15,447 votes), defeating chemist Nancy Goroff, who garnered 29.5% (6,477 votes). The race was called by the Associated Press at 9:50 p.m. EDT. Avlon's victory, by a margin of 41%, positions him to challenge the incumbent, Trump-backed Republican Nick LaLota, in the upcoming general election. This district, located in eastern Long Island, is considered one of New York's battleground areas.
