VisitJim Larranaga Steps Down as Miami Basketball Coach After 14 Seasons, Bill Courtney Named Interim
Dec 26, 2024, 04:30 PM
Jim Larranaga, head coach of the University of Miami's men's basketball team, is stepping down after 14 seasons with the program. The 75-year-old coach's decision comes amid a challenging season for the Hurricanes, who have a record of 4-8 and have lost 18 of their last 22 games dating back to the previous season. Larranaga led Miami to its first-ever Final Four appearance in 2023, along with six NCAA Tournament appearances and four Sweet 16 trips during his tenure. He is the winningest coach in the program's history with a record of 274-174. Bill Courtney, the associate head coach, will take over as interim coach for the remainder of the season. Larranaga's career also includes a notable stint at George Mason, where he led the team to the Final Four in 2006 as an 11-seed. The announcement of Larranaga's departure is expected to be made at a press conference scheduled for the afternoon of December 26, 2024.
