Oct 28, 2024, 02:22 PM
A 39-year-old Orthodox Jewish man was shot multiple times from behind while walking to a synagogue in Chicago's West Rogers Park neighborhood on Saturday morning. The attacker, identified as 23-year-old Sidi Mohamed Abdallahi, allegedly shouted "Allahu Akbar" during the assault. Security footage from a doorbell camera captured Abdallahi's actions. Approximately 20 minutes after the initial shooting, Abdallahi returned to the scene and opened fire on police officers and paramedics who were attending to the victim, again reportedly shouting "Allahu Akbar." He also shot at a Chicago Fire Department ambulance. A two-and-a-half-minute shootout ensued, during which police returned fire, critically wounding Abdallahi. The victim was transported to a local hospital and is currently in stable condition. Abdallahi has been charged with attempted murder, aggravated discharge of a firearm, and aggravated battery. No hate crime charges have been filed at this time. This incident adds to the rising number of anti-religious hate crimes in Chicago. According to the Chicago Police Department, there have been 80 such incidents so far this year, 70 of which targeted Jewish individuals.
