Jeff Bezos has ended The Washington Post’s long-standing practice of endorsing presidential candidates, leading to significant internal backlash. David Hoffman, Molly Roberts, and Mili Mitra, a third of the editorial board, have stepped down from their positions on the board in protest. Bezos expressed reservations about endorsements as early as late September, and the decision was announced by Washington Post CEO William Lewis. The paper will not endorse any candidate in the current or future presidential elections. Molly Roberts has publicly attributed the decision to Bezos, stating that the lack of endorsement is a statement in itself. This decision comes just 11 days before the 2024 presidential election. Hoffman recently won the 2024 Pulitzer Prize in editorial writing.
