Argentine President Javier Milei has announced the launch of the Argentine Nuclear Plan, aimed at enhancing the country's capabilities in nuclear energy and supporting the development of artificial intelligence (AI). The plan includes the construction of a 4 MW small modular reactor (SMR) at the Atucha site, starting in 2025 as a pilot project, and the development of uranium reserves. Milei, alongside Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), and his chief advisor Demian Reidel, emphasized the strategic importance of nuclear energy for meeting the growing energy demands of AI. The initiative is expected to attract foreign private investment, particularly for the exploitation of Patagonia's resources, and involves the construction of four reactors. The plan also involves the creation of the Argentine Nuclear Council, led by Reidel, to oversee the project and ensure energy sovereignty. This move is part of a broader strategy to position Argentina as a global leader in nuclear technology and AI development.
