VisitJapan and Philippines Sign RAA Defense Pact Allowing Troops Training Amid Rising Tensions
Jul 8, 2024, 01:40 AM
Japan and the Philippines have signed a landmark defense agreement, known as the Reciprocal Access Agreement (RAA), on Monday, July 8, 2024. This pact will allow the deployment of troops on each other’s territory for training and joint exercises. The agreement marks a significant step in bolstering defense ties between the two nations amid rising tensions with China in the South China Sea and the Taiwan Strait. The signing ceremony was witnessed by Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and involved Philippine Defense Secretary Guibo Teodoro and Japanese Defense Minister Minoru Kihara. The RAA builds on the strategic partnership established between Japan and the Philippines since 2011, and it is expected to enhance regional stability and security in the Indo-Pacific region. The agreement was discussed during a 'two-plus-two' meeting and may lead to more coalitions.
