VisitJapan Enacts Law on June 12 to Ensure Access to Third-Party Apps on Apple and Google iOS Platforms
Jun 12, 2024, 10:00 PM
Japan has enacted a new law on June 12 aimed at curbing the dominance of tech giants Apple and Google by ensuring access to third-party apps and payment systems on their platforms. This legislation, passed by Japan's parliament and the Diet on Wednesday, prohibits these companies from blocking third-party app stores and services that compete with their native offerings. The move is seen as a significant step towards opening up the mobile app market, similar to recent regulations in the European Union. As a result, the Epic Games Store and Fortnite will be available on iOS in Japan by late 2025. Apple and Google have stated they will engage with Japan over the new law.
