VisitJanelle Bynum Defeats GOP Incumbent in Oregon's 5th District, Narrows GOP Majority, Becomes First Black Member of Congress from State
Nov 14, 2024, 07:17 PM
Janelle Bynum has defeated GOP Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer in Oregon's 5th Congressional District, marking a significant win for the Democrats. Bynum's victory makes her the first Black member of Congress from Oregon. This win also narrows the Republican majority in the House. Chavez-DeRemer, who previously lost to Bynum in state House races in 2016 and 2018, has formally conceded the race. The Associated Press called the race Thursday morning, and Bynum declared her victory shortly after. The GOP had taken this seat in 2022.
