JAMA Study Shows Increase in Tubal Sterilization After Roe v. Wade Overturn, Especially in Abortion Ban States

A new study has found a significant increase in the use of tubal sterilization in the United States following the overturning of Roe v. Wade in 2022. The study, published by JAMA, indicates that more women chose to have their fallopian tubes tied or removed to permanently prevent pregnancy in the six months after the decision. This rise in sterilization rates was observed across all U.S. states, with a notably steeper increase in states that have implemented abortion bans. The increase in surgical sterilization is attributed to growing fears of the consequences of unintended pregnancies in the wake of the Dobbs decision.
