The social media account of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro on X, with 13.5 million followers, was hacked on the night of January 23, 2025, according to his son, Rio de Janeiro city councilor Carlos Bolsonaro. The breach was used to promote a fraudulent cryptocurrency named $BRAZIL, described as the 'official currency of Brazil.' The hacked account posted messages, which remained online for about 40 minutes, claiming that Bolsonaro had launched this new cryptocurrency and included images of Bolsonaro alongside former U.S. President Donald Trump. Carlos Bolsonaro announced that recovery efforts for the account were underway.
