VisitIsraeli Soldier Flees Brazil Amid War Crimes Investigation After HRF Complaint
Jan 5, 2025, 07:24 AM
A Brazilian federal court has ordered police to investigate an Israeli soldier, an IDF reservist accused of committing war crimes in Gaza, following a nearly 500-page complaint by the Hind Rajab Foundation (HRF). The soldier, currently in Brazil as a tourist, is alleged to have participated in the destruction of civilian homes in Gaza as part of Israel's recent military operations. The HRF claims that the soldier filmed himself committing these acts. The court's decision represents a significant development, marking the first time a Rome Statute signatory has bypassed the International Criminal Court (ICC) to directly enforce its provisions. Israeli media reports indicate that the soldier fled Brazil upon learning of the investigation and is en route back to Israel. Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid criticized the government's handling of the situation, calling it a 'huge diplomatic failure' and expressing concern that Israeli soldiers might fear traveling abroad due to potential arrest.
