VisitIsrael Strikes Houthi-Controlled Yemen Port, Killing 14, After Tel Aviv Drone Attack
Jul 22, 2024, 11:34 AM
Israeli airstrikes targeted the Hodeida port in Yemen, controlled by Iran-backed Houthi rebels, in retaliation for a drone attack on Tel Aviv that killed one person. This marks the first time Israel has launched strikes against Yemen. The airstrikes, which hit oil storage facilities, a power plant, and cargo cranes, resulted in the deaths of at least 14 people and injuries to over 80 others. The Houthis have vowed significant retaliation, with their leader Abdul Malik al-Houthi warning of further escalation. The strikes have exacerbated the humanitarian crisis in Yemen, with fires still burning and significant damage reported to the port's infrastructure. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that the strikes were a direct response to the drone attack. The Houthis' drone, identified as a modified Iranian-made Samad-3, traveled over 2,600 kilometers to reach Tel Aviv. The Israeli Defense Forces are on high alert, anticipating potential further attacks from the Houthis. The strikes aimed to disrupt Iranian weapons supply routes and damage dual-use infrastructure.
