Oct 28, 2024, 09:26 AM
Israel has signed a significant defense agreement valued at approximately NIS 2 billion ($535 million) to expand its acquisition of the 'Iron Beam' laser interception systems. The deal, involving Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and Elbit Systems, aims to enhance Israel's air defense capabilities by intercepting drones, rockets, artillery, and mortar bombs at a lower cost per shot. The high-powered 100kW laser system, also known as 'Magen Or', is expected to become operational within a year. This development is part of Israel's broader strategy to bolster its multilayered missile defense system, which includes the 'Iron Dome'. The 'Iron Beam' system is anticipated to provide greater superiority in defending against ballistic missiles and other aerial threats. The Defense Ministry has indicated that the first capability of the ground laser system is expected to enter operational service soon.
