The High Court of Justice has ruled that Justice Minister Yariv Levin's delay in appointing a new Chief Justice for nearly a year is unlawful and has ordered him to initiate the appointment process. This development comes amid increasing tensions within Israel's government, with the justice minister blocking Supreme Court appointments and ministers defying the attorney general, posing a significant challenge to the country's democratic institutions. The court also ordered the justice minister to convene the committee to select the new president.
