VisitIsrael and Lebanon Near 60-Day Ceasefire Agreement with U.S. Mediation
Oct 30, 2024, 03:50 AM
Senior officials in Israel have indicated that a potential agreement to end hostilities in Lebanon is emerging. White House envoy Amos Hochstein has reached understandings during his recent visit to Lebanon and may soon visit Israel to finalize a deal. The proposed ceasefire includes a 60-day adjustment period during which the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) will remain in some areas of Lebanon. The Lebanese army is expected to dismantle Hezbollah's remaining infrastructure up to the Litani River. Additionally, the agreement aims to implement a more robust version of UN Resolution 1701, which prohibits Hezbollah military activity in southern Lebanon. U.S. advisers, including Amos Hochstein and Brett McGurk, are set to visit Israel to help finalize the agreement. Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer has also drawn up a proposal that includes bolstering the Lebanese army and UNIFIL's presence in southern Lebanon. Israeli officials are optimistic about the progress of these negotiations.
