VisitIsrael and Hamas Engage in Renewed Ceasefire Talks, Hostage Release in Phased Approach
Jul 6, 2024, 07:00 PM
Mediators are set to continue indirect talks between Israel and Hamas to close remaining gaps over a proposed ceasefire deal. Hamas has dropped its demand for a permanent ceasefire, agreeing to a phased approach with written commitments from the U.S., Egypt, and Qatar. Israel has expressed optimism but insists on no changes to the proposed framework. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sent a delegation led by Mossad Director David Barnea to Doha and Cairo for further negotiations. The talks aim to secure a ceasefire and the release of hostages, with discussions on the second phase to begin within 16 days after the first phase. CIA Director William Burns is expected to visit Cairo this week for further discussions. Thousands of Israelis have taken to the streets, demanding the government secure the release of hostages and calling for early elections.
