VisitIsrael Expands 'Iron Beam' Laser Defense with $530 Million Deal, Operational in 2025
Oct 28, 2024, 11:58 AM
Israel's Defense Ministry has signed agreements totaling approximately NIS 2 billion ($530 million) with Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and Elbit Systems to significantly expand the acquisition of the 'Iron Beam' laser interception systems, known in Hebrew as 'Magen Or.' The high-powered 100kW laser system, designed to intercept rockets, drones, artillery, and mortar bombs at a cost of around $1,000 per shot, is expected to become operational within a year, by 2025. By integrating with the existing Iron Dome system, the Iron Beam will enhance Israel's air defense capabilities, offering greater superiority against ballistic missiles and aerial threats while substantially reducing interception costs.
