Iran Executes Over 900 People in 2024, Including 31 Women, UN Reports

In 2024, Iran executed at least 901 people, including 31 women, marking the highest number of executions since 2015, according to the United Nations human rights office. The majority of these executions were for drug-related offenses, but the tally also included political dissidents and individuals linked to the 2022 mass protests sparked by the death of Mahsa Amini in police custody. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, expressed deep concern over the year-on-year increase in executions, urging Iran to halt this rising tide. The number of women executed in 2024 was the highest in at least 15 years, with many of these women being victims of domestic violence, child marriage, or forced marriage, and charged with murder.
