VisitIran Executes German-Iranian Jamshid Sharmahd, Abducted from Dubai; Germany Recalls Ambassador
Oct 28, 2024, 08:32 PM
Iran has executed Jamshid Sharmahd, a German-Iranian national and US resident, following his conviction on terrorism charges related to a 2008 mosque bombing in Shiraz that killed 14 people and injured over 200. Sharmahd, a 68-year-old software developer and California resident, was accused of leading the Tondar organization and charged with 'corruption on Earth.' He was abducted by Iranian agents in Dubai in 2020 and taken to Iran, where he was detained, denied a fair trial, and sentenced to death. His family and Amnesty International have denounced the charges as baseless and the trial as unjust. Germany's Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock condemned the execution, recalling Germany's ambassador from Tehran and summoning Iran's charge d'affaires. The European Union and the United States also condemned the execution, highlighting Iran's disregard for human rights and due process.
