Indonesia has introduced new regulations allowing women to have abortions up to 14 weeks gestation in certain cases, an extension from the previous limit of six weeks. The new rules specify that first trimester abortions in cases of rape or medical emergency are now legal. However, these regulations, issued this week, also grant the Indonesian police sole authority to approve abortions for rape victims, a move that has drawn criticism from rights activists who argue that it is regressive.
