VisitIndian Coast Guard's Biggest Drug Bust: 6,000 kg Meth Seized Near Andaman; Six Myanmarese Crew Held
Nov 25, 2024, 07:56 AM
On Monday, the Indian Coast Guard seized a fishing boat carrying a massive consignment of drugs, estimated at around five to six tonnes of methamphetamine, in the Bay of Bengal near the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. This operation is likely to be the biggest ever drug haul by the Indian Coast Guard, significantly surpassing the previous largest seizure of 3,500 kg earlier this year. The vessel, intercepted during a coordinated air-sea operation, had six Myanmarese crew members on board. Defence officials state that this seizure is part of a nationwide crackdown on narcotics smuggling. Typically, the Indian Coast Guard seizes about 1-1.5 tonnes of drugs in an entire year, highlighting the scale of this operation. The confiscated drugs could be worth billions of dollars.
