India's Government Defends 2019 Triple Talaq Law in Supreme Court

The Central government of India has filed a fresh affidavit in the Supreme Court defending its 2019 law that criminalises instant triple talaq. The government argues that the law is essential for ensuring gender justice and equality for married Muslim women, as the Supreme Court's 2017 ban on the practice was deemed insufficient. The affidavit states that the triple talaq practice legitimised and institutionalised the abandonment of wives by their husbands and was neither Islamic nor legal. The law aims to protect the rights of Muslim women and uphold constitutional goals.
