VisitICC Issues Arrest Warrants for Netanyahu and Gallant Last Week, EU and G7 Obligated to Act
Nov 26, 2024, 10:45 AM
The International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued arrest warrants last week for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. According to the Rome Statute, all 124 state parties, including EU member states, are legally obligated to arrest and surrender them to the court. Josep Borrell, the EU Foreign Policy Chief, emphasized that enforcing ICC warrants is mandatory for EU members, highlighting concerns over potential double standards if the warrants are not executed. The G7 countries, except the United States, which does not recognize the ICC, have stated their commitment to respecting their obligations under the arrest warrant. Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani noted that the G7 is working on a unified stance regarding the matter.
