VisitHouse Unanimously Passes Bill to Boost Security for Presidential Candidates After Trump Assassination Attempts
Sep 20, 2024, 04:07 PM
Following two assassination attempts on former President Donald Trump, lawmakers are pushing for increased security for presidential candidates. The House of Representatives unanimously passed the Enhanced Presidential Security Act, which mandates that major presidential and vice-presidential candidates receive the same level of Secret Service protection as sitting presidents and vice presidents. The bill, introduced by Rep. Mike Lawler and Rep. Ritchie Torres, aims to address gaps in candidate protection. Senators Rick Scott and Marco Rubio are also advocating for similar legislation in the Senate. The bill's passage in the House, with a 405-0 vote, highlights bipartisan support for enhancing the security of presidential candidates. The legislation, also known as H.R. 9106, follows a July 13 attack and is supported by Senator Lankford.
