The U.S. House of Representatives has passed H.R. 82, the Social Security Fairness Act, which aims to repeal the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and Government Pension Offset (GPO). Led by Reps. Abigail Spanberger and Garret Graves, the bipartisan legislation seeks to ensure that public servants—including teachers, firefighters, police officers, postal workers, and other government employees—receive the full retirement benefits they have earned. Repealing the WEP and GPO could increase benefits by more than $350 per month for over two million public servants and their spouses. Representatives from both parties expressed support for the bill, which was brought to the floor via a discharge petition. The bill now heads to the Senate for consideration.
