VisitHong Kong Blocks First Media Outlet FlowHK; Police Target US Host Automattic
Oct 6, 2024, 02:37 PM
Recent reports indicate the apparent blocking of the diaspora media outlet FlowHK's website in Hong Kong. Internet users in Hong Kong reported being unable to access FlowHK's website on Friday, leading to suspicions that it has been blocked. This would mark the first instance of a media outlet being blocked in Hong Kong, although other overseas websites have faced similar restrictions. The Hong Kong Security Bureau declined to comment on the situation, referring inquiries to internet service providers. However, it was revealed that the Bureau had earlier sent a threatening letter to FlowHK's service provider. This incident follows a similar attempt involving a web host in Israel, as documented in a Freedom House report on Beijing’s global media influence. Additionally, Hong Kong police sent a threatening letter to US web host Automattic, demanding the removal of FlowHK's site.
