Hong Kong performance artist Sanmu Chen was briefly detained by police on June 3, the eve of the 35th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square crackdown. Chen, also known as Chen Shisen, was surrounded by over 30 police officers in Causeway Bay after he appeared to sign the numbers '8964'—a reference to the date of the 1989 Tiananmen Square crackdown—in the air with his finger. He made these gestures silently and wore a white shirt. Reports indicate that Chen has since been released, although it remains unclear whether he was formally arrested. Chen was taken into a police van.
