The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has finalized the 2024 Final Rule on Public Health Service Policies on Research Misconduct. This significant update, the first major rewrite since 2005, aims to emphasize research integrity, streamline the research misconduct process, and preserve research funds. The rule aligns with the Biden-Harris Administration’s priorities of fostering scientific integrity and advancing medical science. Notably, the new regulations, finalized by the Office of Research Integrity, dropped a controversial proposal that would have allowed the publicizing of previously undisclosed misconduct findings by universities.
