Nov 2, 2024, 11:10 PM
Vice President Kamala Harris has taken a surprising lead over former President Donald Trump in Iowa, according to the final Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa Poll before Election Day, conducted by Selzer & Co. The poll, released just days before the election, shows Harris with 47% support among likely voters, compared to Trump's 44%, within the margin of error of ±3.4%. This marks a significant shift in a state that Trump won by 8 percentage points in 2020 and by 9 points in 2016. Harris's surge is powered by strong support among women voters, including a 28-point lead among independent women and significant backing from senior women at 63% to 28%. Additionally, Harris has consolidated 97% of Democratic voters, while Trump's support among Republicans is 89%. The Selzer poll, highly regarded for its accuracy, indicates strong support for Harris among women and independent voters in Iowa.
