The GST Council has decided to exempt services by way of hostel accommodation outside educational institutions up to Rs 20,000 per person per month. This decision, announced by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, was made during the GST Council meeting on Saturday. The move is expected to benefit thousands of students staying in hostels. Students from various institutions, including Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Delhi, Kota, Mohali, and Chandigarh University, have expressed their happiness and relief over the decision. They believe it will make hostel living more affordable and accessible, particularly for students from economically weaker sections. The decision has been praised by educational leaders and students alike, with many considering it a commendable step by the government. Ashok Kumar Mittal, Founder Chancellor of Lovely Professional University and AAP Rajya Sabha Member, also lauded the decision.
