VisitGreek Tanker Sounion Attacked in Red Sea, On Fire After Suspected Houthi Strike
Aug 21, 2024, 08:49 AM
A Greek-flagged oil tanker, Sounion, operated by Delta Tankers, was attacked in the Red Sea, approximately 77 nautical miles west of Yemen's Hodeidah. The vessel was initially approached by two small boats, leading to an exchange of gunfire. Subsequently, the tanker was struck by three unidentified projectiles, causing it to lose command and engine power. The attack, suspected to have been carried out by Yemen's Houthi rebels, left the ship adrift and on fire, though no casualties were reported. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) has been monitoring the situation, noting suspicious activity from small crafts nearby.
