Oct 25, 2024, 08:12 PM
Phil Lesh, the bassist and a founding member of the Grateful Dead, has died at the age of 84. Lesh, a classically trained violinist and jazz trumpeter who reinvented the role of rock bass guitar, passed away peacefully on October 25, 2024, surrounded by family, according to a statement on his official Instagram account. His dense and inventive playing powered the Grateful Dead's iconic sound, contributing to songs such as 'Box of Rain.' Lesh was renowned for his 'Phil bombs,' deep, resonant bass lines that became a hallmark of the band's music. After the band's dissolution in 1995, he continued to perform with various groups, including Phil Lesh and Friends, often collaborating with younger musicians to 'push the music onward.' His 'Darkstarthon' series on YouTube showcased his continuous exploration of new sounds until the very end. Lesh was one of the longest surviving members of the band that defined the acid rock sound emanating from San Francisco in the 1960s. His influence on music, legacy of creativity, community, and endless jams will be remembered. As reflected in his song 'Box of Rain,' 'Such a long, long time to be gone, and a short time to be there.'
