California Governor Gavin Newsom vetoed Senate Bill 961 on Saturday, which would have required all new cars built or sold in California starting in 2030 to be equipped with speed-limiting technology that alerts drivers when they exceed the speed limit by 10 miles per hour or more. The bill, authored by state Senator Scott Wiener, aimed to enhance pedestrian safety by mandating that vehicles alert drivers if they were going too fast. Newsom's veto message stated that the bill presents several challenges. Earlier, Senator Wiener and pedestrian safety advocates had urged the governor to sign SB 961.
