The initiative, set to last for six months, will see officers aboard trains from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., as stated by NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch. Hochul's announcement, made during her State of the State address, comes in response to recent violent attacks in the subway system, aiming to reduce crime and the fear of crime among riders. The state will finance this effort, though specific costs have not been disclosed. Hochul also plans to install additional safety measures, including platform barriers at 100 stations and brighter LED lighting across all subway stations to improve safety and visibility.
